Common questions

Where is my data stored?
All data is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB (a built-in browser database). Nothing is sent to any server. You can export, import, and delete your data anytime from Settings.
Is the AI analysis done locally?
Sentiment analysis and topic classification run 100% locally using Transformers.js (no internet needed). For advanced profile analysis, you can optionally connect your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter). Even then, only aggregated statistics are sent - never raw browsing data.
Which platforms are tracked?
Social media: YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, Reddit, and LinkedIn. E-commerce: Amazon, Mercado Livre, Shopee, and 20+ other sites. General browsing is also tracked for Deep Analysis mode. You can toggle each platform individually.
Does it slow down my browser?
No. MIRROR uses lightweight content scripts that observe the DOM without blocking the page. The service worker runs in the background with minimal CPU usage. AI models are loaded on-demand, not at startup.
Is it free?
Completely free. No premium tier, no subscriptions, no ads. The only optional cost is if you choose to use your own Cloud AI API key for advanced analysis.
What permissions does the extension require?
MIRROR needs permissions to: (1) Read and modify data on tracked platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to detect your activity, (2) Storage to save data locally in IndexedDB, and (3) Offscreen documents to run AI models in the background. We never request permissions beyond what's necessary for core functionality.
Are you using platform APIs (Facebook, YouTube, etc.)?
No. MIRROR does not use any platform APIs. Instead, it observes the rendered front-end (the DOM) of pages in your browser—the HTML elements and their content. With JavaScript, the extension detects when you scroll, click, or interact with content. This means platforms cannot rate-limit or block MIRROR, and we don't need API keys from them.
What can I do with my tracked data?
You have full control: Export your tracked data as a JSON file for your own analysis or backup. Import previously exported data to restore your history. Delete all tracked data and predictions anytime from Settings. Once deleted, data cannot be recovered since nothing is stored on our servers.
Will you make a mobile version?
We recognize that most social media usage happens on mobile. However, there's no technical way to access native mobile apps (Facebook app, Instagram app, etc.)—and that's actually a good thing for your privacy. The only alternative would be to build our own mobile browser app, which goes against our mission of providing a seamless user experience. Therefore, we have no plans for a mobile version.
Do you have connections to data brokers or surveillance companies?
Absolutely not. MIRROR has zero connections to data brokers, surveillance companies, or any organization that profits from personal data. We will never sell, share, or monetize user data. Our entire philosophy is built on data ethics and privacy as a human right, not as a business model.
How is MIRROR funded?
MIRROR is an independent, self-funded project by Felipe Vieira. There are no investors, no venture capital, and no corporate sponsors. This ensures that our only obligation is to users—not to shareholders or advertisers. The project is maintained as a public good, inspired by the original Data Selfie by Hang Do Thi Duc.
